600 Developers on three continents using 300 virtual machines running on 30 physical boxes saved me 2 million in hardware, has a smaller carbon footprint, and allows me to use the hardware at 90% utalization 24/7. When something bad is about to happen to one of the boxes or when I need some downtime I dont need to distrupt development. Everyone stays up while they are migrated to other hardware. The DRS functionality in virtual infrastructure means that developers with busy VMs get the resources they need automaticlly.

I think the answer for the 'I'm a developer, I don't need all the VI stuff' is to buy VMware Workstation - which is intended for developers. I'm not saying it's a good answer - just their answer. I still think VMware server is nothing more than a teaser product for VI. I've said that since they first announced they were dropping GSX and adding the Server product, and this move is just more reason to believe that.

Player = Teaser for Workstation
Server = Teaser for VI

That said, I agree, VMware does a great job, and is (in my opinion) leading the industry in management of the VMs. I think they will have a run for thier money if Xen gets a sleek interface, and more easily supports multiple OSes.
